Market leader Japanese solar market
We are fully committed to the photovoltaic business, and have recently been identified by the world-renowned market research group, IHS Research, as one of the top five global suppliers in the inverter industry. In Japan, we have consolidated our leading position, where the residential solar sector is continuing to grow rapidly, and we have used this success to build our international markets, focusing on Italy and Spain as well as in emerging solar markets, such as Ukraine, Turkey, Lebanon and South Africa.
Our strong experience in the Japanese solar market has proven to be a very solid platform for our expansion in Europe and in new emerging markets. That’s because the Japanese government has always set very rigorous regulations for residential solar, and to meet those requirements we have had to develop many innovative technologies.
Succesfully preventing islanding
A good example of this innovation is AICOT, our technology to prevent “Islanding”, a condition in which a solar power system continues to generate electricity when electric power supplied by the grid is interrupted.
If Islanding occurs workers repairing power lines are endangered and the grid may be damaged. Hence, rapid detection of power outages is mandatory to shut down the Inverter.
The main innovation introduced by AICOT (Anti Islanding Control Technology) is that power outage is detected via frequency changes rather than via voltage changes. The completed AICOT system can detect an Islanding condition in less than 0.2 seconds and shut down the inverter in less than five seconds, as requested by grid code. This high performance has made AICOT Japan’s official standard. AICOT is required for JET certification, and it is mandatory for grid connection in Japan,
Available in many different sectors
The same high performance technology is now available to solar energy users in many different sectors, especially in industrial automation.
To develop AICOT controller and to run preliminary tests, our engineers used a simulation environment, reducing the time spent in final integration and tests in a real environment, where Islanding conditions are either difficult or unsafe to replicate.

In OTA city, a town in Japan – many residential PV plants are located close to each other on the rooftop of almost every house. Omron PV inverters are installed in these PV plants containing the AICOT Technology. This technology allows correct detection of islanding and ensure safe PV plant operations.
