Ecodesign Directive
The improvement of environmental performance of products throughout the whole lifecycle is tackled much more effectively when attention to it is paid already at the design phase.
The Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC establishes a framework for the setting of ecodesign requirements for energy-related products.
Every five years the Commission focuses on certain product categories considered to have a relevant impact in terms of energy and/or resource used. At the end of this study period, new Product Specific Regulations are adopted, the so-called Implementing Measures (= IM), each laying down ecodesign requirements dedicated to a defined product type.
At OMRON we constantly monitor the development of this set of Measures and take the necessary actions, when required.
Variable Speed Drives (VSDs)
The Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/1781 lays down ecodesign requirements for Variable Speed Drives. From 1st of July 2021 one obligation is the minimum classification of the VSD according to the International Energy Efficiency class IE2, which defines the maximum power losses of the device.
Our customers willing to know more about OMRON on-going activities with regards to this matter, are kindly invited to take a look to the dedicated Ecodesign letter for VSDs, available on this page.
Electronic Displays
The Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/2021 lays down ecodesign requirements for Electronic Displays, which from 1st of March 2021 not only aim to improve the material efficiency of the products but also to ease the recycling at the end of life.
Below the main requirements are listed:
- Marking of certain plastic components, according to the type of polymer;
- Utilizing halogen free material for plastic stand and enclosure;
- Adding the cadmium free (or cadmium inside) logo;
- Providing the End of Life manual, with dismantling information.
OMRON products in the scope of the Regulation accomplish to these requirements.
